Ring-spun slub yarn retains the natural softness of cotton fibers and eliminates the harsh roughness of chemical blended yarns and low-grade spun yarns, with negligible hand feel difference between dry and wet states, meeting the wearing experience requirements of high-end garments.

Firstly, the fabric features natural and well-proportioned three-dimensional texture. Random distribution of thick and thin yarn segments forms subtle and uneven concave-convex texture on the fabric surface, breaking the flat and monotonous visual effect of ordinary denim. This texture is not artificially rough, but a naturally formed mild layered sense from fiber structure. Secondly, it delivers rich and naturally transitional fading layers after washing. The fiber density varies between thick slub segments and thin base segments of ring-spun slub yarn. During indigo dyeing and subsequent finishing processes such as enzyme washing and stone washing, the loose fibers of thick slubs absorb more color and fade slower, while the compact base yarn absorbs less color and fades faster. III. Production Core: Weaving Difficulties of Ring-spun Slub Denim

The high-end value of ring-spun slub denim lies not only in its superior garment texture, but also in its rigorous and complex production and weaving processes. Compared with conventional denim, it has an extremely low error tolerance rate, requiring high precision in equipment, precise process parameters, refined production management and experienced operators, which explains why small and medium factories struggle to mass-produce high-quality products.

First, it poses high difficulties in yarn adaptation and loom parameter adjustment. The uneven thickness structure of slub yarn leads to more drastic tension fluctuation than uniform ordinary yarn. During weaving, excessive tension causes deformation of thick slub segments and breakage of thin segments, resulting in yarn breakage and machine shutdown; insufficient tension leads to uneven fabric density, skewed texture and fabric wrinkling. The production process requires real-time adjustment of core parameters including loom tension, running speed and opening angle according to slub specifications with refined whole-process control, making standardized mass production infeasible and demanding rich professional experience.

Second, fabric defect control is extremely stringent. Slub yarn weaving is prone to defects such as slub dislocation, uneven density, partial streaks and bar marks. Slight defects on ordinary denim can be covered by post-finishing, yet any artificial modification will destroy the overall natural texture of ring-spun slub denim. Therefore, full-time real-time inspection and piece-by-piece quality control are required throughout production, with timely equipment parameter adjustment and defective grey fabric elimination, resulting in a much lower yield rate than conventional denim.

Third, it is challenging to control shrinkage rate and dimensional stability. Although ring-spun slub yarn features tight fiber cohesion, its irregular structure leads to higher sensitivity of warp and weft shrinkage after dyeing, pre-shrinking and setting. In particular, elastic ring-spun slub denim is prone to sewing twist, uneven width and excessive length deviation due to different shrinkage coefficients of spandex and cotton slub yarn. Targeted optimization of pre-shrinking temperature, setting speed and tension control is required, greatly increasing the complexity of production management.

Fourth, it has high requirements for finishing process adaptation. The core advantage of the fabric lies in its diverse washing layers. Slight deviations in washing temperature, enzyme concentration, washing duration and friction intensity during finishing will cause unbalanced light and dark layers and abnormal partial fading. Customized washing solutions must be formulated for each batch according to slub density and yarn count, with no universal standardized process, further raising the technical threshold of production.

IV. Market Difference: Full-dimensional Cost Composition and Value Gap

There is a significant price gap between mid-range ordinary slub denim and high-end ring-spun slub denim. Essentially, it derives from full-chain differences in raw materials, processes, quality control and yield rate, rather than mere texture differences. The cost gap is mainly reflected in four aspects.

First, higher raw material costs. The ring-spinning process has higher raw material loss than open-end spinning. To guarantee superior texture, high-quality raw materials such as combed cotton and long-staple cotton are mostly adopted with higher procurement costs than ordinary cotton yarn. In addition, slub yarn requires customized spinning parameters, resulting in higher costs for small-batch customization and difficulties in large-scale mass production, further raising unit raw material prices.

Second, low production efficiency and high labor costs. Conventional denim can be mass-produced at high loom speeds, while the loom speed for ring-spun slub denim needs to be reduced by about 30%. Full-time staff are required for real-time machine debugging and defect inspection, greatly lowering production efficiency. Meanwhile, process debugging, defect troubleshooting and customized finishing rely on senior technical personnel, leading to significantly higher labor and technical costs than ordinary denim.

Third, higher equipment and energy consumption costs. To meet the weaving requirements of slub yarn, high-precision rapier looms, intelligent tension control systems and accurate pre-shrinking and setting equipment are required with higher equipment investment and maintenance costs. In addition, repeated process debugging, low-temperature low-speed setting and refined washing processes consume more water and electricity resources than standardized mass production.

Fourth, high loss costs caused by low yield rate. Affected by yarn tension fluctuation, weaving deviation and finishing instability, the production yield rate of ring-spun slub denim is far lower than that of conventional denim, with high loss and rework costs for defective grey fabrics. In contrast, low-end market slub denim adopts low-parameter open-end spinning and extensive production, achieving high yield rate and low loss, which further widens the cost gap.
